So, when it comes to skin care routines there’s no need to spend a ton of time or a ton of money. The fewer steps there are, the more likely you are to do them…and as with everything else, consistency is key to getting the results you desire and deserve.
The Skinny on Skincare Routines
Your day to day skincare routine can make a big impact on how your skin looks over time. Here are our tips and advice on the order of products in your facial skincare routine.
Step 1: Cleanse
Choose a gentle cleanser based on whether your skin is dry, oily or combination. If your skin is dry consider a cleansing milk, an oil cleanser or micellar cleanser.
If your skin is oily consider a mattifying cleanser formulated to tamp down oil without stripping all the oils away because this can kick your oil glands into overdrive and lead to even more oil production. Charcoal, clays and even the addition of salicylic acid could be helpful.
If your skin is both dry and oily choose products that are non-comedogenic which means they won’t clog your pores. It’s kind of like goldilocks: avoid products that are too creamy or greasy as this may lead to clogged pores.
At the same time, you don’t want to use products that further dry your skin out like alcohol which also can increase oil production. Choosing products formulated for all skin types is a safe bet
Step 2: Treat
Apply your anti-oxidant serum (ex. vitamin C, E, green tea extract, resveratrol) or blemish treatments directly after cleansing and before moisturizing.
Typically, a pea-sized amount of skincare treatments is all you need for the entire face. This doesn’t seem like a lot, but you may be amazed by how far a pea-sized amount of product will go.
You may want to place a pea-sized amount on your fingertip and then gently take a small amount with your finger and dot it on all the areas of your face and then gently massage into the skin. If you feel you need a little more in one area, then add a little more there.
Step 3: Moisturize & Protect
Apply a moisturizer and sunscreen (SPF 30) after you have applied any serums or treatments. This will seal them in and protect your skin.
Reapply sunscreen as the day unfolds and especially before you drive. You may choose to layer a powdered translucent sunscreen on top of your skin if you wear makeup to avoid having to redo your makeup
Step 4: Makeup
After you have applied sunscreen, then apply your makeup.
In the evening:

Use the same cleanser from the morning
If you wear makeup, add a gentle eye makeup remover and cleanser to remove impurities and makeup from the day.
Step 2: Treat
Apply your anti-oxidant serum or blemish treatment on clean skin. To help increase skin cell turnover, reduce appearance of fine lines and discoloration apply a topical retinoid or retinol if you can tolerate it (your skin may already be dry and irritated). A little bit goes a long way, you only need a small green pea amount. If you can’t tolerate a retinoid, consider using a product with bakuchiol. Studies have shown that it works just as well without the irritation.
Step 3: Moisturize
Seal in with a moisturizer. Some opt to use a thicker moisturizer at night than during day that soaks in as you sleep.
